Life Happens

Planning a wedding should be filled with only happy experiences.  Unfortunately this isn’t always the case.  We wanted to talk about a very real issue that affects couples every day. Every day brides and grooms postpone or cancel their weddings for several reasons.  The death or illness of a loved one can severely alter our lives, but when you are planning the most important day of your life, the effects are far more devastating.

We felt this was an important topic to write about as this is something that couples have to deal with far more often than you would think.  If someone suddenly becomes ill what do you do in regards to your plans? Some couples want to hurry up and get married right away so their loved one can be there while others postpone indefinitely or cancel the wedding. Ultimately you have to think about what’s best for you and what the person would want for you.  Would they want you to postpone or cancel your wedding…probably not?

Renee Dwyer and Saul Zamora were married at Menifee Lakes Country Club, a beautiful golf course wedding location in Menifee on August 14, 2009.  Renee and Saul had originally set there wedding date for June 24, 2009. They had almost called the wedding off twice and considered changing the date a few more times as well.  All of this was due to the illness of Renee’s mom.  The staff at Menifee Lakes Country Club was very sensitive to Renee’s situation and worked with her very closely. For more information on Menifee Lakes County Club, visit them on page      .

For Renee and Saul, they postponed but ultimately went through with their plans.

They had an intimate ceremony and reception with 55 guests.  It was a very beautiful and special day. Once they knew they were going forward, Renee’s mom was ecstatic and she contacted Rancho Verano, (page   ) who specializes in Clydesdale horse and carriages. She had said it had always been her daughter’s dream to have a horse drawn carriage at her wedding and while she didn’t have a lot of money due to her illness, she wanted this for her daughter.  Her daughter’s dream came true as did her mom’s when she saw her daughter enter her wedding in a beautiful carriage pulled by a magnificent Clydesdale! This particular story had a happy fairytale ending.

Here are some suggestions should you decide to go forward with your plans like Renee and Saul. -   Have your photos uploaded to a Web site throughout the event so that your relative or friend can view them almost as if they were there. Some locations offer web cams for this purpose.  You can also check out webcastmywedding.net and vowcast.com,.  Either of these sites can make it possible for your loved one to watch the wedding as it is happening.

-   You can mention the person in your program with some information on why they are special to you and why they are unable to attend the wedding.

-   You can use something important to that person at your wedding such as your grandmother’s pearls.

-    Instead of favors, use that money toward a donation to the charity that has significance to the person who is ill. (You can leave notes of explanation at each table.)

-    Have the band or DJ play a special song in honor of your loved one.
